It is a battle that the National Assembly will remember for a long time. This Tuesday, the Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti accused the National Rally of opposing two Frances, that of “rural and quiet France, Catholic and white, to the France of the cities, the France of Mohamed, Mouloud and Rachids. The lawyer also called on Marine Le Pen’s party to “drive out from (its) ranks the ‘Gudards’, the identitarians, the nazillons, the racists and the anti-Semites”.
“A great confusion of minds”
A response deemed “filthy” by Marine Le Pen, who wishes to file a complaint. Invited this Wednesday morning, political scientist Dominique Reynié believes that there is “a great confusion of minds”, adding “to be struck by the language register of the Minister of Justice.”
Shortly before this heated exchange, the deputies paid tribute to young Thomas, stabbed last week at the end of the ball in the village of Crépol, in Drôme. A minute of silence that the Director General of Fondapol struggles to understand. “We remember the minute of silence for Nahel. Now, we had the minute of silence for Thomas. It is a way for the National Assembly, inevitably, to tell us that these are not news items, therefore that these are political facts,” he judges.
A country really divided in two?
Minutes of silence which, for the political scientist, characterize the idea of two Frances facing each other. A point on which the government is nevertheless trying to counterbalance. “We pay tribute to everyone, because we have to compensate in some way. And ultimately, that’s what the Minister of Justice also says. There would therefore only be two Frances and we would have to compensate, move on from one to the other through symbolic signs, showing a form of emotion for one of the two Frances, another form of emotion for the other of the two Frances,” he analyzes.
“I find that our leaders are misguided in their understanding” of the subject, he concludes, believing that it is not “reassuring to oppose, based on this news item, two Frances, and to distinguish them in the mouth even from the government.
