The Cook Islands: spirit of discovery, cannibalism and love of freedom

The history of the Cook Islands begins with the brave Polynesian sailors who, centuries ago, crossed the vast Pacific in fragile canoes in search of new lands. These remarkable explorers established settlements on Rarotonga, led by courageous leaders such as Ru and Tangiia around 800 AD. They brought their cultures and traditions to the islands, which prospered well before the arrival of Europeans.

The first contacts with Europeans in the 16th century brought dramatic changes. Spanish explorers came first, followed by the British and French. Captain James Cookafter whom the archipelago was later named, mapped many of the southern islands in the 18th century, although he never saw Rarotonga himself.

However, the real tragedy occurred in the early 19th century, when European traders and adventurers came to the islands. In 1814 the crew of the Cumberland landed on Rarotonga. Conflicts quickly arose between the islanders and the newcomers, leading to violent clashes. It was in this context that Ann Butchers, the captain’s girlfriend, was tragically killed and, it is said, eaten by the locals. Their fate remained enshrined in the annals of the island’s history as a grim testimony to the early conflicts.

In the 19th century, the European presence intensified with the arrival of missionaries who successfully spread Christianity, ending local customs such as cannibalism. Towards the end of the century, Queen Makea, an influential local ruler, sought protection under the British Crown to counter French ambitions, eventually leading to the establishment of a British protectorate.

In the 20th century, the islands were annexed by New Zealand, which lasted until 1965, when the Cook Islands finally lost theirs Self-government acquired. Since then, the Cook Islands have established an independent and democratic government that remains closely linked to New Zealand, but with strong local governance and a vibrant public debate.
