With the release of a new opus, Dune is increasingly stepping onto the Star Wars toes. Find out what we think about it in our JV Debate.

Two Sagas, two legends

Dune And Star Wars are surely the two most famous and followed works of science fiction of all time. The first is basically a novel by Frank Herbert published in 1965. With the Dune cycle, which brings together 6 books, the author recounts the intergalactic conspiracy surrounding the Atreides family, the exploitation of a rare resource on the planet Arrakis, and the greatest war that humanity has known causing more than 60 billion deaths. After having experienced more than twenty books which expand its universe, and a cinematographic adaptation which did not really please, the Dune saga has had a makeover through Denis Villeneuve. For his part, Star Wars appeared in 1977 with A New Hope. A true meteor in the world of cinema, it is the first episode of a trilogy which marked an entire generation. There followed a prelogy in 1999 and a postlogy which ended in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker. With Dune 2 which is doing very well in the cinema, we are entitled to wonder if the saga of Atreides could one day surpass that of Skywalker. In any case, this is the question we asked ourselves in our JV Debate.

Dune, the eternal second?

In this JV Debate, Nagla, a fervent defender of Star Wars, opposes Jay who asserts that Dune could surpass Star Wars. For him, “the Star Wars hype is gone”. Indeed, the last numbered films in the galactic saga have not really excited the crowds and the series released on Disney + are of less and less interest. Next to that, Dune 2 has a strong position to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. But as Nagla retorts, although the films have not had good reviews, they still bring in just as much. Apart from the Han Solo spin-off (392 million euros), all the films have exceeded one billion in worldwide revenue. With three series and 7 films, including two trilogies, Star Wars is not ready to be caught. To discover all the others from both parties, do not hesitate to see our JV Debate.
