A new manga adaptation will soon hit Netflix, and this time it’s a cult work from the 80s and 90s. This manga with its somewhat wacky concept has already been adapted several times, and this same by a French director. But this time, this crazy hero will be back in Japan, and the crazy tone of his first trailer promises a faithful adaptation!

When we talk about cult manga from the 80s and 90s, we often think of classics like Ghost in the Shell or Dragon Ballwhich unfortunately lost its creator recently, but also works which still persist today like Sailor Moon, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventureand of course One Pieceon which Netflix set out last year to produce a live action series. And obviously, this manga will not be its only victim, since another adaptation of a cult manga will soon arrive at the SVOD giant…
Some know him as Ryô Saeba and others prefer to call it Nicky Larsonbut anyway, the hero of the manga City Hunter will soon be back in a live-action film. This time, it will not be a French production, as was the case for Nicky Larson and the Scent of Cupidthe 2018 film that we owe to Philippe Lacheaubut rather a collaboration between Netflix and the director Yuichi Satō (The Master Plan, Kisaragi). In the casting, we find Ryohei Suzuki (Egoist) in the main role, Misato Morita (Missing) in the role of KaoriAnd Masanobu Andô (Battle Royale) in that of his brother, Hideyuki.
The “Mokkori” dance soon on Netflix
The story of City Hunter focuses on Ryô Saeba (or Nicky Larson), a womanizer who tries to clean up the streets of Tokyo by getting rid of the thugs who roam there, all accompanied by Hideyuki Makimura, a former police officer. But Ryô has the particularity of only accepting contracts given by pretty women, to the great dismay of Kaori Makimura, Hideyuki’s sister, who seems to have feelings for Ryô. The first images of the film were revealed last month through a teaser that you will find at the top of this article, but it is in a trailer full of humor that Netflix highlighted the zany side of the “cleaner”:
The trailer opens with a little song which may seem perky, but whose lyrics are rather explicit. “Mokkori” is a term popularized by City Hunter in the 80s, and is an onomatopoeia supposed to represent an erection, which Ryô often used in reference to the beautiful young women to whom he hopes to be of service. Obviously, the identity of Nicky Larson remains intact, and this adaptation has nothing to envy of its predecessors in terms of questionable humor. That said, the action scenes shown in this trailer look rather qualitative and seem to totally correspond to the crazy concept of the hero created by Tsukasa Hojo.
