Last summer, spectators only had eyes for the famous Barbie versus Oppenheimer duel at the cinema. Unfortunately, it was to the detriment of one of the best action films of the year.

A highly anticipated action film…

Normally, the arrival of a new film with Tom Cruise was a bomb at the box office and in popular culture. It must be said that the actor generally plays in very big budget productions which offer a great quality show with guaranteed entertainment. Recently, for example, he broke many records with the return of Top Gun, which is one of the films that revived cinema after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, while the last Impossible mission was eagerly awaited by his fans, he did not have the success he could have hoped for.

Make no mistake, Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning remains a big success. With its $567.5 million collected at the worldwide box office, it far exceeded its budget of 291 million dollars. However, this amount did not really happen as quickly as hoped. In the United States, it ended its screening period at barely $172.1 million, less than the film’s budget. A real shock for the Paramount production teams who were betting everything on this new opus of the successful saga. Indeed, the communication around the film was massive several months in advance, in particular thanks to the famous scene of motorcycle stunt performed by Tom Cruise himself. As is often the case in Mission: Impossible, this famous scene was far from being the only impressive one in the film. In the end, this seventh episode was certainly one of the best action films of 2023, and even if it had everything to succeed, it did not have the expected success at all. The fault of a release date which placed it between two other juggernauts also highly anticipated.

…to success eclipsed by Barbie and Oppenheimer

If we had told you a few years ago that the success of Mission: Impossible would be eclipsed by the arrival of a biopic on a historical character and a film adapted from the Barbie doll, you would surely have laughed in our faces. However, this is indeed what happened in 2023. Released barely a week before the Barbie / Oppenheimer duel, Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning suffered greatly from this bad coincidence of timing. The films of Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig simply had the effect of a tidal wave in cinemas, and spectators only came to see these films, totally ignoring Tom Cruise and his stunts.

In total, Oppenheimer still peaks today at $957.1 million at the global box office, far surpassed by barbie which continues to wreak havoc with its $1.4 billion. Suffice to say that these two figures are absolutely staggering, and a far cry from that of Mission: Impossible. Note, however, that since they are both nominated for Oscars, the Christopher Nolan and Barbie films still continue to be shown in theaters even several months after their release, further increasing their global box office scores. Fortunately for Mission: Impossible fans, the film’s disappointing score shouldn’t stop Paramount from continuing the saga, even though Dead Reckoning recently officially lost its “Part 1” title. The film should also join the Paramount+ catalog in a few months, once the deadline imposed by the media timeline is reached.
