Warning, if you have not seen Blade Runner by Ridley Scott (released in 1982), there will be spoilers in this article. We are going to discuss the last words of Roy Batty, played on screen by the late Rutger Hauer. At the end of Blade Runner, Roy Batty releases a tirade that will go down in the history of SF: “I’ve seen things you humans wouldn’t believe” he said. “Great warships on fire, rising from Orion’s shoulder. I saw fabulous rays, C-rays shining in the shadows of the Tannhäuser Gate… All these moments will be lost in oblivion, like tears in the rain. It is time to die” he concludes.
In an old interview, the actor explained that the day before filming, he decided to rework the script by removing parts of the basic text and adding others. “The dove was my idea” he specified before adding: “the text was one page long and very complicated. Lots of words”. This is why the actor decided to shorten his monologue, he who was convinced that the basic text did too much to go into pathos. When Rutger Hauer submits his idea to Ridley Scott, the latter accepts without batting an eyelid. According to the actor’s words, the director left a lot of freedom to his casting because he wanted to make a film focused above all on the characters.

With its budget of 28 million dollars, the film grossed 32 million in the United States.
