Sheffield staggers out of the Premier League with an embarrassing record

While Liverpool FC is increasingly withdrawing from the championship race at the top, Sheffield United has to be relegated again after just one season in the English Premier League. The traditional club is already plagued by a sad record – which could get even worse.

Sheffield United will be relegated from the English Premiere League after just one season – and could say goodbye with a sad record. The traditional football club from Bramall Lane lost 1:5 at Newcastle United on Saturday and theoretically has no chance of staying in the league with three match days to go. The Blades have already conceded 97 goals.

That is already the highest value for the Premier League in its current form with 20 teams. In the 1994/1995 season, however, the league consisted of 22 teams, at that time Swindon Town even had to accept 100 goals – and even this negative mark is now wobbling, although Sheffield played four fewer games this season than the previous record holder.

At least not historically weak

“We weren’t good enough, this league was too strong for us throughout the entire season,” said team manager Chris Wilder to the BBC, criticizing the goals that were once again conceded too easily: “There’s a reason why this is happening. This is an incredibly young team , who completely lacks leadership on the pitch. Sometimes I think I’m close to having a heart attack when I try to convey my content.”

United, who won their only league title in 1898, looked like a certain relegation early this season after promotion. There have been three wins so far, the biggest defeat of the season so far was an 8-0 defeat in the first leg against Newcastle. However, at least in terms of points, Sheffield is not the historically weakest team in the Premier League: Derby County continues to hold this value, having only collected eleven points in the 2007/2008 season. Sheffield has scored 16 points so far.
