An anime and a J-Drama that marked an entire generation

Fans of manga and anime know it well: the GTO saga has truly marked a generation of fans of Japanese culture. Published between 1997 and 2002, the original manga includes no less than 25 volumes. As a reminder, GTO (also called Great Teacher Onizuka) tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a very special teacher. Barely 22 years old, he describes himself as “single and free as air” and is not ashamed of his more than dubious past. Despite this unsavory profile, he managed to be recruited as a teacher in a difficult class in Japan. Unlike his colleagues, Onizuka will try an unconventional and non-conformist teaching method which will quickly bear fruit..

While the manga already had palpable success at the time of its release, GTO was quickly adapted into both an anime series and a Japanese Drama (J-Drama). If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, the animated series is also available on Crunchyroll. Japanese Drama, for its part, has had phenomenal success in its country of origin, becoming a true television classic. 26 years after the end of the latter, the project is reborn thanks to a special episode.

Japan’s craziest teacher is back

If you liked the live-action version of GTO in the late 1990s, you will be delighted to learn that a new episode should soon be released on Japanese television! Called GTO: Revival, this special episode arrives 26 years after the end of the original series and will allow us to see Takashi Sorimachi again in the shoes of the main character. A few weeks ago, the project was revealed in all its forms thanks to a one minute teaser.

It was enough to reassure the fans: the spirit of the J-Drama seems to have been preserved. Between the chainsaw that we can see at the end of the video and the reprise of the original theme “POISON”, we can say that the producers gave their fans a nice gift. Professor at Sutoku Academy, Onizuka will therefore be back for a special episode in which the students and faculty seem threatened by a mysterious influencer. A situation that the professor with his particular methods will certainly be able to approach with his trademark humor. If you want to discover this new episode of GTO, you will have to wait until April 1, 2024when it will be broadcast on Fuji TV in Japan to mark the channel’s 65th anniversary.
