Japan has dominated the animation market, primarily in Asia, for decades, but that could change in the coming years. A new actor has been in the news for several months, and this actor… is China. At the end of 2020, a Chinese anime made a strong impression. Three years later, he repeated this feat. Season 2 has just propelled it into the TOP 30 best anime of all time.
A heavenly blessing
A Chinese anime creates a surprise in early 2024 and sits comfortably in the TOP 30 best anime of all time on MyAnimeList (the benchmark social network for Japanese animation, but not only). On January 19, Heaven Official’s Blessing rose to 28th place in the TOP with a score of 8.83/10and more precisely season 2 broadcast between October 18, 2023 and January 17, 2024. The first season (8.34/10) which dates back to the end of 2020 – beginning of 2021 then the special (8.32/10) had already been warmly welcomed by fans of japanimation who know how to be open-minded.
Heaven Official’s Blessing is not an anime (referring to Japanese productions), but a donghua (term which designates animated series produced by Chinese studios) adapted from the series of novels of the same name started in 2017 and written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Broadcast on Bilibili (a Chinese video sharing platform) in China and on Crunchyroll in the West, Heaven Official’s Blessing tells the story of a crown prince brutally brought back to the mortal realm after having experienced the elevation to the heavens… many times.
The skies shake, thunder rumbles, and Xie Lian appears with an apologetic smile – once again! Eight hundred years ago, he was a beloved martial god, known as the Crown Prince of Xianle. Today he ascends to the celestial realm for the third time, but simply as a pitiful scrap metal collector god, with no followers behind him. -MyAnimeList
