To beat Demon Slayer at the box office, you have to have strong arguments, and that’s the case with this animated film which broke records.
Haikyu!! is one of the most popular sports mangas in recent years. The work is made up of 45 volumes and the anime in four seasons, with the last episode broadcast on December 18, 2020. After four years of waiting, the end of the story written by Haruichi Furudate will finally be adapted into a film with two very distinct parts. The first act has been broadcast since February 16 in Japan and is already breaking records.
A worthy finale
On its first day of broadcast in Japan, “Haikyu!! The movie Battle of Garbage Dump” (or “The Dumpster Battle”) accumulated 890 million yen, the equivalent of six million dollars. It then ranks fourth among the biggest hits of the genre for a first day of broadcast, just behind big names like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, One Piece: Film Red and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Where the film creates even more surprise, is that it completely eclipses the last adaptation of Demon Slayer on the big screen, with “To the Hashira training” (En route vers l’trainement des pillars) released 2 weeks before, which, according to Anime News Networks, collected 640 million yen on its first day of broadcast. When you know the popularity of Koyoharu Gotoge’s work, there is reason to be surprised. Now all we have to do is keep an eye out for the film throughout its run in theaters in Japan, and maybe it could break some more records. Unfortunately for us, the film doesn’t yet have an international release date, but fans are eagerly awaiting an announcement soon.

The success of the film Haikyu!! in Japan is not so surprising when you know the popularity experienced by the original work as well as the animated adaptation. However, there are plenty of successful sports manga, and here the beginning is even rather classic: a hero who arrives in a volleyball club which can no longer win, and who comes to change everything. Except that there, the victories do not follow directly, but on the contrary, the team loses a lot. We then witness a reconstruction through failure, with a strong desire to achieve even just one victory. This is mixed with a very present humor, which is very well integrated into the dialogue and the relationships between the different characters.
