Will we ever see Mel Gibson on the big screen again? The star of Mad Max and Lethal Weapon has several projects in production, but it is difficult to know if the actor will indeed make his return to theaters after almost ten years of absence.

Several projects in the pipeline

It’s been several years now since Mel Gibson appeared in a film released in theaters. The last time was in 2016 in the French director’s project, Blood Father. But since then, the actor/director has only participated in feature films released directly on streaming platforms or on VOD. An astonishing turning point in the career of a monument like Mel Gibson who still received two Oscars in 1996 for Braveheart.

For the moment, it is rather on the side of realization that we should find it. As a director, Mel Gibson is currently associated with four projects. The first is Lethal Weapon 5 for which he must succeed the late Richard Donner, the historic director of the saga. There is also the remake of The Wild Horde, the sequel to his film The Passion of the Christ and finally Flight Risk, a thriller directed by Makr Wahlberg.

A new role in the cinema?

On the acting side, it’s leaner. If we obviously hope to find Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 5 which he also directs, it is not certain that the film will be released in theaters. And for the rest, there is just as much doubt. The actor appeared in the series The Continental and is set to play an aging detective in Boys of Summer, a family fantasy adventure film that will put him on the trail of a mysterious witch. We also note the upcoming release of Boneyard, a muscular thriller which depicts the hunt for a serial killer named “The Bone Collector”. These two films are currently in the post-production stage, but nothing is known about their release date and their theatrical distribution – in France at least – is not yet assured. There is therefore still hope of finding Mel Gibson on the big screen. To be continued!
