We know a little more about the next Zelda film: it is made by a fan for the fans.
Nintendo, Wes Ball and Sony are on a boat
Remember, in 2023, a few months after the release of Tears of the Kingdom and the Mario film, Nintendo formalized the production of a live-action Zelda film. At that time, we learned that the project was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto as well as by Avi Arad, to whom we owe the arrival of Spider-Man in the cinema under the direction of Sam Raimi. “I have been working on the film (…) for years”, explained Shigeru Miyamoto during the announcement, specifying that Nintendo was “very implicated”, but that all the necessary time would be taken to make the best feature film possible.
Nintendo has placed its trust in Wes Ball, director of Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom, to bring the legends of Hyrule to life. “This incredible fantasy and adventure film will not be like The Lord of the Rings, it will have its own breath”, affirmed the director shortly after the official announcement. “I always said to myself: I would really like to see a live-action Miyazaki film (…) and that’s what I would like to see on screen”. An exceptional project, exceptional circumstance: Sony will distribute the film. Kenichiro Yoshida, the CEO of Sony, reiterated at the start of 2024 how he was “enthusiasm” by this adaptation which will “expand the licensing universe”.

The most important thing in his life
It was during the promotion of the new film based on the Planet of the Apes franchise that Wes Ball gave reassuring news from the Zelda movie. The director indeed indicated that the Nintendo series was “one of the most important things in his life” and “fans will be happy”.
I think it’s going to be great. The fans will be happy. For me, The Legend of Zelda is one of the most important things in my life. You know, right after Star Wars. I played The Legend of Zelda throughout my childhood and into adulthood. You see what I mean ? I am a fan. I’m a real fan. Reassuring words which inevitably lead to the question of the release date. On this point, Wes Ball hits the nail on the head: “I can’t even tell you, otherwise Nintendo will sue me” he joked. He nevertheless assured that the film would be released “over the next decade”. You will have to arm yourself with a Master Sword… and patience!
