What have netizens discovered on Starbuck Island (unrelated to the coffee shop chain)? An interesting object lies there in the sand. Apparently it hit the beach and left a drag mark behind it on the ground. Have users seen a crashed “UFO” on Google Maps?
The sighting was shared on Reddit. To see them you have to enter the following coordinates in Google Maps: -5.634605, -155.933597. And then activate the satellite view. Alternatively, of course, Apple Maps or Google Earth will do the trick.
Ruins of a guano production
As so often, the truth is less spectacular. These are the ruins of a former guano collection site. Guano consists of bird droppings and is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. Starbuck Island is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is part of the island nation of Kiribati.
There is little vegetation on the island and it is uninhabited except for its bird population. The island has also been given the nicknames “Barren Island” or “Starve Island”, probably due to shipwrecked seafarers. Today the island is a nature reserve.
