Currently free of charge instead of 3.99 euros: App breathes new life into old iPhones

If you still have an older iPhone in the drawer, you can get it out now. The “IP4K: Phone as IP Camera” app brings the old treasure back to life and transforms the Apple cell phone into an IP-based security camera. Normally you have to pay just under 4 euros for it. Currently available for free.

Update: The promotion has unfortunately already expired. The app now costs 3.99 euros again.

Save 4 euros: App turns iPhone into an IP cam

Thanks to the app “IP4K: Phone as an IP camera” you can give your old iPhone a meaning again. Actually, why not make a security camera out of it? Still better than letting the good piece rot. Normally available in the App Store for 3.99 euros, but is currently free for a short time. But what exactly does the app do?

Live videos from the app can be viewed wirelessly on your local WiFi using Google Chrome or any other device. Simply enter a Chrome browser address “(rtsp: //”) from IP4K and you’re done. Also works with VLC player or Apple TV via Chromecast. Good to know: Since the app naturally quickly discharges the battery of the iPhone, you should probably leave the power supply connected. Alternatively, the refresh rate can be reduced to save energy.

Please check the price again before downloading. Unfortunately, we don’t know how long the app will be free:

How good is the app?

Sounds quite practical, but what good is the app in the end? The US store currently has 4.1 out of 5 maximum stars with almost 60 ratings. The app does a little worse in the German App Store – 3.8 out of 5 stars with currently almost 30 ratings. The rather bad German translation of the app is chalked up here. Bottom line, but still useful. One opinion is singled out (translated):

Works exactly as advertised
This IP camera app is super easy to set up and use. I launch the app and it tells me the IP address of the camera (phone) and the URL. I simply enter this into the VideoLan (VLC) streaming address of another device or computer and the moving image appears. It’s quick and easy. The app is very fast and has an adjustable resolution for different data rates. I love this app and can only recommend it.

There are two different specifications for the system requirements. In the app description, the developer speaks of iOS 9.1, in the app information, iOS 13.1 is already listed. In the end you just have to try it. The app is not only suitable for the iPhone, but “IP4K: Phone as an IP camera” can also be used with an iPad.

These apps belong on your cell phones one way or the other:

Very important: Unfortunately, we don’t know how much longer the app will be free. If in doubt, download it quickly and check the price again before downloading.
