Curtains: what colors and materials to choose? : Current Woman Le MAG

To dramatize the space, there is no better accessory. Majestic, its tall undulating silhouette does more than adorn the windows: it catches the eye. The curtain is also sumptuous with its richer texture than ever. Easy to live with because machine washable, polyester now imitates natural materials such as wool terry, linen or cotton velvet. Woven or embroidered, it gains thickness and is adorned with graphic patterns. We choose it ready to install or have it made to measure (with an additional cost of around 15% at Mondial Tissus, Heytens or directly online at blinds-et-rideaux.com).

Colored curtains

Colorful curtains add sparkle to atmospheres that are a little too demure. In bright colors, we prefer deep tones, easier to live with. And rather than choosing the same fabric for the furniture, we vary the palette on a few accessories, like reminder touches.

To know. Integrated into the curtain, the ribbon with loops allows you to camouflage the rod. As it slides less well than eyelets, we reserve it for fabrics that we do not handle every day.

Linen curtains

Simple and elegant, washed linen brings charm to the room. Soft and slightly wrinkled, he is easy to live with. To make it even cozier, we choose a thick, warm-colored fabric (old pink, ocher, rust…). And we don’t hesitate to leave some length on the ground (5 to 10 cm).

To know. The thicker the fabric, the better it protects from daylight. For total concealment, an opacifying lining is sewn on the reverse side. And we equip ourselves with an elbow rod, which allows the fabric to be positioned on the sides of the window.

Tone-on-tone curtains

With their natural shades, the curtains contribute to the soft harmony of the room. Linen or greige colors are preferable white fabrics, which do not coexist well with walls of the same color: if the two whites are not identical, one or the other risks appearing dirty.

To know. To protect against glare and privacy, a curtain can be added on the same rod or on a parallel bar (double wall supports are then required).

Patterned curtains

Like a stylized plumage, the design of this embroidered fabric repeats itself endlessly. Delicately iridescent, it catches the light. WE love the contrast between the richness of the patterns and the sobriety of the surrounding decor.

To know. For an enveloping and relaxed brittle drape, add 5 cm to the height between the rod and the floor (+ 2 cm if you prefer it not to drag). An iron-on strip allows you to adjust the length of the curtain without sewing.

Colorful curtains in the same shades as the walls

The good idea when you have a colored wall: choose curtains with patterns in the same shade. Matching, the colors are highlighted while the light background of the fabric (here a light gray) brightens the room. Graphic embroideries bring personality to this minimalist atmosphere.

To know. The rod must be placed between 5 and 10 cm above the window and protrude 15 cm on either side.

Curtains in warm colors

Black door frames, gray tiles… To warm up the industrial style, equip yourself with a pair of squirrel color curtains, a warm brown which tends to be red. More refined than if they were printed, the patterns of this thick jacquard fabric are woven. Good point also for walls painted in kaolin, a light taupe more welcoming than white.

To know. For heavy fabrics and/or bars longer than 200 cm, it may be necessary to use a third wall support to hold the rod.

Curtains in cocoon mode

Richly embroidered with maple leaves, the emerald curtains camouflage the door and protect against drafts. A refined detail, the ocher satin braid creates a reminder of color. A lick of dark blue paint, an armchair and a rug, the entrance is transformed into a cozy little living room.

To know. To better insulate against cold and heat, we equip the curtains with a metallic thermal lining, to be sewn or fixed with Velcro.
