Before the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, in December 2020, the developers were ambitious and the players were impatient with the idea of discovering the new production of CD Projekt RED, the Polish studio known for the license The Witcher. But very quickly, the community became disillusioned, faced with the many problems encountered by the RPG, which forced the company to review its plans, especially with regard to multiplayer.
Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Philipp Weber told Eurogamer why multiplayer never saw the light of day, and that’s due to the game’s disastrous launch. In December 2020, when the title suffered from an incredible number of problems, especially on consoles, developers had to reprioritizemaking important choices.
The priority was that the main experience was working and in a very good condition for everyone. And essentially, the shift in priorities meant other projects had to go. With Cyberpunk, we wanted to do a lot of things at the same time, and we had to focus and say to ourselves ” Ok, what’s the important part? Yeah, we’re gonna make this part really good “.
And one of the things that has therefore been left out is multiplayer. But CD Projekt RED has done just that, while redesigning its online features for the future. If the studio remains a producer and developer of solo games, the online approach will be modified, with the aim that each game developed can, if necessary, offer multiplayer, without distorting itself.
