The Dutch series winner Mathieu van der Poel made a bad mistake at the Cyclocross World Cup in Hulst.

On his last lap, van der Poel spat at spectators who had booed him. «I had enough of the booing. What were they calling to me? Ask them yourself, I won’t repeat it,” said the 28-year-old.

At the time of the incident, Van der Poel was driving past a group of spectators holding a Belgian flag. Van der Poel’s big rival, the Belgian Wout van Aert, was tied back early due to a fall.

Another co-favorite, the British Thomas Pidcock, fell. Van der Poel won the race, it was his 7th success in a row. He remains undefeated this season.
