In the lower half of the table there will be a duel between Aryna Sabalenka and Jelena Rybakina in Spain’s metropolis. The path to the semi-finals was different for both of them.

Like a year ago, Aryna Sabalenka was able to eliminate Russian teenager Mirra Andrejewa (WTA 43) at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. In 2023, the now 17-year-old fell by the wayside in the round of 16, and in the reprise she was eliminated against the Belarusian one round later.

In the undisputed 6:1, 6:4, world number 2 Andrejewa conceded a single game more. In the fight for a place in the final, the 2-time Australian Open winner Sabalenka will now face Jelena Rybakina (WTA 4).

With his head in a noose

The in-form Kazakh, who had recently been successful in Stuttgart, had actually already been eliminated in Spain’s metropolis. She was behind against compatriot Yulia Putintseva (WTA 50) 4:6, 7:6 (7:4), 2:5 and had 2 match points against her.
