Cyprus shaken by earthquake

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus and the entire eastern Mediterranean were shaken by an earthquake early Tuesday morning. The European earthquake monitoring station ESMC stated the strength of the earthquake as 6.5. The center of the tremor was about 120 kilometers northwest of Limassol under the sea at a depth of 51 kilometers. Information about possible victims or serious damage was initially not available.

Thousands of people ran into the streets and spent the night outdoors, reported the Cypriot State Radio (RIK). The quake occurred a few minutes after 2 a.m. CET on Tuesday morning. The quake was also felt in southern Turkey, Israel, Crete and Rhodes in Greece and Egypt, the reports said.
