Marketa Vondrousova is the third Czech Wimbledon champion. The 24-year-old has a lot to look forward to on Monday.

“I don’t really know what’s going on here. But it feels wonderful, »said Marketa Vondrousova after her historic success on Saturday at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old had just triumphed as the third Czech after Jana Novotna (1998) and Petra Kvitova (2011 and 2014) in the lawn Mecca in London.

In the hour of her greatest success, Vondrousova spoke comforting words to the defeated Ons Jabeur (TUN) and looked back on her difficult last year. After an operation on her left wrist, Vondrousova had to sit out six months and missed Wimbledon in addition to the French Open and the US Open. With her wrist in a cast, she was visiting London as a tourist at the time.

Tennis is crazy!

With this history, it is “wonderful that I am here with the trophy,” says Vondrousova: “Tennis is crazy!” Comebacks are never easy and she didn’t know if she would ever get back to her old level.

A packed Monday awaits the winner

Vondrousova was cheered on in the final by her husband, who had flown in especially for the final. Before that he had taken care of the cat at home. The couple celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Monday.

July 16, 2023 should be extremely busy for Vondrousova. Because in addition to various media appointments and the wedding day, a visit to a tattoo studio could also be on the agenda. “I bet my coach that he would have to get a tattoo if I won a Grand Slam tournament,” revealed the Czech, who has numerous tattoos herself. Another copy should also be added to her.

Vondrousova was applauded on Center Court by tennis icon Billie Jean King, among others. The 79-year-old was the last unseeded player in a Wimbledon final 60 years ago – back then as Billie Jean Moffitt. In contrast to the Czech, however, the American lost the final back then. Before Vondrousova, an unseeded player had never won Wimbledon in the “Open Era” (since 1968).

From Monday in the top 10 for the first time

For Vondrousova it is only the 2nd title at WTA level. Before her coup on Church Road, the 2021 Olympic finalist had only been able to celebrate a tournament win in April 2017. Namely at the indoor tournament in Biel. Vondrousova is still the only Biel champion. Because a year later, the Swiss event moved to Lugano.

Thanks to the 2000 WTA points for her Wimbledon triumph – which flushes an additional 2.75 million euros into the bank account – Vondrousova will be listed as the new world number 10 on Monday. It’s the first time that the Czech has cracked the top 10. Previously, rank 14 (four years ago) was her best ranking.
