The National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians recommends that maternity hospitals accept the accompanying person in the delivery room. Conditional access to limit the risk of spread of Covid-19.

News that will certainly reassure many future mothers. In view of current health context, the delivery rooms have tightened their rules regarding the presence of the father, especially for reduce and prevent the risks of covid-19 contamination. Thus, some maternities refuse the presence of the accompanying person in the work room, while some hospitals allow it, like structures that do not care for patients with coronavirus.

This Friday, March 27, the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) recommended accepting support in the work room “From the active phase of work, with no possibility of back and forth. ". Regarding barrier gestures, they will be called back outside the entrance to the room.
The press release therefore specifies new rules:

  • "No father leaves the room for the duration of the birth under any circumstances (drink, eat, smoke …). In the event of discharge, he must permanently leave the hospital.
  • Father must ring to go to the toilet
  • Provide cereal bar, cookie, etc. in the delivery bag. A meal will be offered as far as possible.
  • The father cannot access hospital services. His departure is at H2 and he returns to look for his spouse. "

So even if the accompanying person is allowed to attend the delivery, the CNGOF recommends that the second parent do not stay more than two hours after childbirth with mother and baby. Also, the CNGOF recommends not to allow outside visits during the time of hospitalization. Thus, these measures will ensure the protection of mothers and babies but also protect the nursing staff.
