Dark Souls 3: A 2D pixel-art version almost saw the light of day, but Bandai Namco rejected the idea


Series Dark Souls has influenced many titles, and not just 3D games. Between Salt & Sanctuary or Death’s Gambit2D games have been able to take advantage of the good ideas of games of FromSoftware while adapting them to a completely different way of conceiving a game. But what would a Dark Souls directly thought for 2D? Imagining this might seem crazy, but the idea was indeed proposed to Bandai Namco, who unfortunately did not want it.

The artist Thomas Feichtmeirwhich has to its credit participation in games such as Blasphemous Where Songs of Conquestsaid on Twitter (before being relayed by Eurogamer) thata 2D re-imagining project of Dark Souls 3 had been offered to Bandai Namco six years ago.

Now that the non-disclosure agreement has expired, he can finally tell us about it and share one of the images from the project. He explains that the explosion of 2D games in this style a few years ago gave birth to the project, but finally, Bandai Namco did not want iteven if the budget would not have exceeded that of other metroidvania of the time according to the artist.

And we’re not going to lie to each other, it’s a shame when you see what the title could have looked like…
