The Pogues bassist Darryl Hunt passed away in London on Monday afternoon. The band announced this via their social media account.
Mourning for the British musician Darry Hunt (1950-2022). The bassist for the punk band The Pogues (since 1981) died in London on Monday afternoon at the age of 72. The band announced this on their official Twitter account. “We are incredibly sad. Our Darryl passed away yesterday afternoon in London. Darryl Gatwick Hunt 04/05/1950 – 08/08/2022,” it said. The musicians quoted a line from Hunt’s song “Love You ‘Till The End”: “I know you want to hear me catch my breath. I love you till the end”.
Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan (64) also posted on his Twitter account: “I am very, very sorry that Darryl passed away, he was a really nice guy and a great friend and a great bass player. We will all miss him. May he have a happy state of eternal bliss and love bless his family and friends.”
Bandmate Spider Stacy (63) also paid tribute to Hunt on twitter tribute and wrote: “This is terrible. See you again Daz.”
From roadie to bassist
Born in Hampshire on May 4, 1950, Darryl Hunt began his career as a member of pub rock band Plummet Airlines and The Favourites. He joined the Irish-London punk rock group Pogues first as a roadie and finally in 1986 as a bass player. Hunt also co-wrote a number of songs including “Love You Til the End”.
One of the Pogues’ best-known songs is “Fairytale of New York” (1987).
