Debutant Hempel wins German duel

Florian Hempel shows little nervousness in the duel with Martin Schindler at the Darts World Cup and provides highlights early on. The debutant wins clearly and is now in the second round of the world’s most important tournament. With his song at the enema, however, he causes confusion.

Debutant Florian Hempel won the German duel at the Darts World Cup and defeated his compatriot Martin Schindler. The 31-year-old clearly prevailed 3-0 in London in the evening and thus reached the second round of the most important tournament in the world.

Hempel showed little nervousness in his first game at Alexandra Palace and achieved highlights early in the game with finishes of 156 and 158 points. Born in Brandenburg, Schindler, on the other hand, also lost his third World Cup game. In an interview with Sport1, the winner said: “Of course I’m happy, I enjoyed it on stage, it was really fun.”

Hempel takes the new corona restrictions, which make it impossible to travel home during the tournament, calmly. “Now you have to concentrate fully on the next game, I don’t know what happens after that. If I win, I will of course stay here,” he said. Hempel will now have to deal with Belgian top player Dimitri van den Bergh, who is in fifth place, on Tuesday evening (10 p.m. / Sport1 and DAZN).

Second German duel in World Cup history

Schindler against Hempel was only the second German duel in the history of the World Cup. Last year, the German number one Gabriel Clemens won the second round duel with Nico Kurz 3-1.

Already at the run-in a contrast between the two training partners became clear. While Schindler came on stage to “Ich will” von Rammstein, Hempel, who was by choice Cologne, sang loudly with “Kölsche Jung” von Brings. That was nothing for the euphoric audience at Alexandra Palace, they just didn’t seem to know the German party song. At least Hempel should have become a little better known by his match against van den Bergh.
