A workflow in the cloud

In the small medium of video editing software, DaVinci Resolve Studio, the program from the manufacturer Blackmagic Design, has made a name for itself for a long time. For its latest version, (currently in beta), DaVinci Resolve 18 adds a cloud sharing function. Thus, everyone connected and using DaVinci can work simultaneously on the same project without having to physically transfer files.

This speeds up, facilitates and optimizes the workflow and distribution of tasks. You can even stream a colleague’s work live to follow the editing. This new version also supports the Blackmagic Cloud which allows you to host different project libraries.

More flexible proxy management

DaVinci 18 completely renews the generation of proxies. Thanks to the new Proxy Generator module, DaVinci automatically manages the original proxies from your camera and allows you to choose between editing with the proxy or original files.

Among other novelties, the program is equipped with functions based on AI and the recognition of objects and subjects. In addition, a “beauty” option optimizes the rendering of faces. With GPU acceleration, you can correct defects and camouflage certain details more easily than before. An effect called “Depth Map” manages to distinguish the background from the foreground to allow you to calibrate one or the other quickly.

A new version boosted with AI

The AI can also detect subjects on its own to allow faster localized retouching. Similarly, Resolve 18 offers a resizing tool that increases the definition of an image to improve quality, even for 8K projects. For audio, compatibility with Dolby Atmos has been extended to support binaural rendering of a so-called “complex” mix.

Price and availability

The BlackMagic Design editing program therefore exists in two beta versions since April 18, 2022 for the most impatient: DaVinci Resolve 18 and DaVinci Resolve Studio 18. The first is free, but does not have all the options of the second, which is sold for €265 on the BlackMagic website. It is in this version that we find all the advances related to AI, advanced audio functions or even the most advanced tools for HDR calibration.
