DAZN is planning a free subscription – that’s what’s behind it

DAZN boss Alice Mascia spoke in an interview about the future of the streaming service. So there could soon be an advertising-financed channel that can be received free of charge. Mascia also comments on the question of whether there will be further price increases.

The sports streaming service DAZN may offer a free, advertising-financed online channel. This was announced by Alice Mascia, CEO for the German-speaking region, in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

How to watch the UEFA Champions League group stage live

“For example, we are thinking about a freely receivable offer on the Internet, so-called FAST channels, i.e. an offer without subscription that is financed by advertising. There, viewers can watch sports around the clock.”

The competitor Sky has already tested a similar model with the broadcaster

Sky Sports News HD

, which could be received on free TV between 2016 and 2021. In the meantime, the station has switched back to pay-TV programming.

As with Sky, it cannot be assumed that licensed games will actually be shown on a free DAZN channel. Instead, a focus on sports news is to be expected, which at the same time serves as a showcase for the service’s paid offerings and is intended to open up new target groups.

Unpleasant for DAZN customers

: When asked whether further price increases could be ruled out, Mascia replied to the SZ:

“It’s a tough business, you know that, nothing can be ruled out. But at the moment we’re very satisfied.”

Most recently, DAZN almost doubled the monthly fee from EUR 14.99 to EUR 29.99. It is somewhat cheaper for customers who take out an annual subscription (EUR 24.99 per month) or with combination packages, for example with Sky or Telekom.
