  • On WhatsApp you are currently confronted with a message. The messenger updates its terms of use.
  • The reason for this is new legal requirements from the European Union.
  • From April 11th you have to agree to the changes. If you refuse, there will be consequences.

The messenger WhatsApp has announced that it will update the service’s terms of use and privacy policy. This is in response to the new EU regulations “Digital Services Act” and “Digital Markets Act”.

Nothing should really change for you, writes the WhatsApp blog WABetaInfo. However, the new guidelines should contain guidelines that provide information about what is allowed and what is prohibited in the app. In addition, the minimum age for use will be lowered from 16 to 13.

The updated guidelines are effective April 11, 2024. A banner above the chat list is already drawing attention to this. In order to continue to use WhatsApp to its full extent after the deadline, you must agree to the adjustments. A corresponding request should then appear in your app. If you don’t agree, you will probably only be able to use WhatsApp to a limited extent, as WABetaInfo suggests.

In this case, you will have to “explore alternative account options”. However, WABetaInfo does not say what exactly is meant by this. You may no longer be able to use some important functions in WhatsApp, or you may no longer be able to access chats.

In 2021, WhatsApp had already changed its terms of use and threatened to block accounts if the changes were not agreed to. This triggered a wave of indignation and WhatsApp alternatives such as Signal and Telegram experienced a real boom and gained millions of new users overnight.
