The very end of Quentin Tarantino’s “Boulevard de la mort”, broadcast this Sunday evening on Arte, is marked by the avalanche of blows received by Stuntman Mike, played by Kurt Russell. But how many exactly does it take in 30 seconds?
This is a cult scene from Quentin Tarantino’s cinema. At the very end of his Death Boulevard, which Arte is broadcasting this Sunday evening, Zoë (Zoë Bell), Abernathy (Rosario Dawson) and Kim (Tracie Thoms), after a long chase, beat up the character of Stuntman Mike, played by Kurt Russell. The scene, which lasts 30 seconds, is distinguished by the avalanche of blows administered by the three women.
At the time, the spectator, struck by a sequence which abruptly closes Tarantino’s feature film, obviously did not count the number of blows taken by Stuntman Mike. By reviewing this scene that remains in the memories, we note that the character still received 37, or more than 1 per second!
It should be noted that it is not Kurt Russell who should have initially received this flurry of blows in Death Boulevard. It was indeed Mickey Rourke that Tarantino had first thought of for the role, but an incompatibility of schedule did not make this collaboration possible.
“My first choice was Mickey Rourke. It was going to be Mickey and Mickey wanted to do it, but then his agents started… Well, his agents said, ‘They need Mickey’. And they started pissing us off”declares the filmmaker, very cash, at the microphone of The Hollywood Reporter.
“It was happening when Robert [Rodriguez] was doing his movie Planet Terror. His agents kept us hanging around. I said something like, “Here’s our offer. You have until 9 a.m. Friday to accept or decline the offer.” And they missed the deadline.”
