In the UK, life is back to normal. After 11 days marked by the disappearance of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96, the English said goodbye to their monarch on Monday. And while the funeral in London was filmed by cameras around the world, a second, more intimate ceremony took place at Windsor Castle a few hours later.
The Queen now rests near her favorite residence alongside her parents, her sister and her husband, Prince Philip. For the occasion, it was the Dean of Windsor who led this last private ceremony, which only close family attended. As Elizabeth II had done at her father’s funeral, Charles threw a handful of dirt on his mother’s coffin.
A memorial open to the public
The relatives of the queen were then able to watch the coffin of the queen and that of her husband, prince Philip, descend into a crypt of three meters by five. The spouses, placed one on the other, are now under the large slab of black marble with gold letters which adorn the floor of the memorial of King George VI.
This small memorial, which is open to the public, was built on the death of the Queen’s father. It is an annex of the Saint-Georges chapel, which houses the royal vault. A vault already reached saturation since it contains nearly 45 members of royalty, including eleven monarchs, rest in the chapel.
