Death of Elizabeth II: which actresses played the queen in The Crown?

After 70 years of reign, Elizabeth II died this Thursday, September 8 at the age of 96. An incredible life that Netflix wanted to adapt in 2016 through the series The Crown. And to best transcribe this longevity, the streaming platform had to call on the services of different actresses to embody the sovereign over time.

It’s one of Netflix’s biggest hits. Since 2016, the American giant has been broadcasting The Crowna series devoted to the reign of the Queen Elizabeth II. And despite the historical inaccuracies pointed out by its detractors, the program was quickly praised by the public and by critics, notably winning 10 Emmy Awards. The fifth season will be broadcast next Novemberbefore a sixth and final season scheduled for 2023.

This series is also an opportunity for fans of the royal family to discover in a new light the stories and adventures of the entourage of Elizabeth II. And to best transcribe the incredible reign of the monarch, Netflix has secured the services of different actresses to embody Elizabeth II. In the first two seasonswhich covers the period from 1947 to 1964, is Claire Foy who played the role of the sovereign. And her performance in the series has been rewarded since the actress won a Golden Globe in 2017 and an Emmy Award in 2018.

It was then Olivia Colman who took over in seasons 3 and 4. Her performance as Elizabeth II was also acclaimed as she received the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama series in 2020, then the Emmy Award in the same category in 2021. A few years ago, Olivia Colman had even had the honor of meeting the monarch at an event related to the seventh art, organized at Windsor Castle.

Imelda Staunton, third actress to play Elizabeth II

And in a few weeks, viewers will discover a new face to take on the role of the queen. That of theImelda Staunton, notably known for having played Dolores Umbridge, the cruel character of the Harry Potter saga. “There is pressure from all sides. I’m taking over from two extraordinary actresses and I’m going to embody an extraordinary human being who is the queen. Everyone knows what she looks like, how she expresses herself. Of course I will try to be as much like him as possible, but I also have to serve up a story.”, said the 66-year-old actress on ITV on July 26. It is therefore a queen now in her sixties, that Imelda Staunton will play in the fifth and sixth seasons, the last two, according to Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown.
