PARIS (Reuters) – The French painter and engraver Pierre Soulages, creator of the “outrenoir”, died at the age of 102, we learned on Wednesday at the museum bearing his name, in his hometown of Rodez (Aveyron).

Born in 1919, Pierre Soulages coined the neologism “outrenoir” in the late 1970s to describe his work with black color and light, a concept he continued to develop for more than three decades.

The painter, who lived in Sète (Hérault) with his wife, also a centenarian, died Tuesday evening at 11:30 p.m. at the hospital in Nîmes (Gard), Benoît Decron, director of the Soulages museum, told Reuters.

World famous, Pierre Soulages notably created the stained glass windows of the Sainte-Foy de Conques abbey (Aveyron).
