Death of Jean-Luc Godard: the channels upset their programs to pay tribute to him

In order to pay tribute to Jean-Luc Godard, who died on Tuesday September 13 at the age of 91, Arte, France 5 and Canal+ will upset their programs in the coming days by offering some cult films by the filmmaker.

Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard died on Tuesday September 13 at the age of 91. This figure of French cinema, who participated in particular in dynamiting the codes of cinema with his comrades of the New Wave, made himself known in 1959 with A bout de souffle, his first feature film which met with great critical and audience.

In order to pay tribute to the director, some French television channels will change their programming in the days to come by offering some notable films from the career of Jean-Luc Godard.

Arte broadcasts Contempt

This Wednesday, September 14, Arte will broadcast at 8:55 p.m. Contempt, a film released in 1963 with Brigitte Bardot and Michel Piccoli. Successful screenwriter Paul Javal is working on an adaptation of “The Odyssey”, which is to be shot by Fritz Lang. He notices that Lang is at odds with Prokosch, the American producer. The latter would like to finance an epic film while the director wants to make a psychological film.

The channel will then show Prénom Carmen at 10:40 p.m. with Maruschka Detmers and Jacques Bonnaffé before moving on to Le livre d’image at 0 a.m., a film that won it the special Palme d’or in 2018. From today until 13 March 2023, you can also find on Arte.tv the feature film A married woman, released in 1964.

France Télévisions pays tribute to him

On the side of France Télévisions, France 5 will broadcast this Friday, September 16 from 9 p.m. Breathless one of the most iconic feature films by the famous filmmaker. Carried by Jean-Paul Belmondo, Daniel Boulanger and Jean Seberg, the film follows Michel Poiccard, a young man who has stolen a car in Marseille, who will kill a policeman on his way.

Arriving in Paris, he meets an American student named Patricia with whom he will make plans to escape to Rome. But when his photo is published in the newspapers and he is hunted down, his fate will change. The channel will therefore program its film Les vestiges du jour initially scheduled for this Friday evening.

Canal+ salutes the memory of the director

The Canal+ group will also honor the memory of Jean-Luc Godard. The Ciné+ Classic channel will thus dedicate the evening of Saturday September 17 to the filmmaker. At 8:50 p.m., you can find Pierrot le Fou in which John Paul Belmondo plays the main character.

Ferdinand, married to a rich woman, is bored. During a party, he meets Marianne, a student he had known five years before. Abandoning his wife, he falls in love with the beauty and settles down with her. Embroiled in shady business, Marianne forces the couple to go into hiding.

The channel will then continue the evening with A woman is a woman at 10:45 p.m. then Alphaville, a strange adventure by Lemmy Caution at 12:10 a.m. In addition to this tribute selection, nearly 30 films are already available on VOD via myCANAL, such as Le Mépris, Vivre sa vie and Les ponts de Sarajevo.
