Death of Jérémie Cohen: two suspects placed in police custody

LThe Bobigny prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday April 13 that two men were taken into police custody as part of the investigation into the death of Jérémie Cohen, a young man of the Jewish faith who was fatally hit in mid-February by a tram. The police custody of the two suspects, aged 27 and 23, which began on Tuesday was extended Wednesday at midday in the premises of the Seine-Saint-Denis judicial police, the prosecution said, without specifying whether they were arrested or surrendered.

On Wednesday February 16 around 8 p.m., Jérémie Cohen, 31 years old and with a slight disability, was crossing the railway tracks when he was hit by the tram in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis) just after being hit by young people. . In cardiorespiratory arrest and the victim of a head trauma, he died in hospital shortly after midnight.

Six days before the first round of the presidential election, the affair took on a political dimension when the far-right candidate Éric Zemmour wondered if Jérémie Cohen was “dead because a Jew”. Marine Le Pen followed suit by evoking a “criminal act” which “could be an anti-Semitic murder”. Faced with the avalanche of political reactions, the prosecutor of Bobigny, Éric Mathais, took the floor last week to indicate that the investigation, opened for “intentional violence in meetings”, did not allow at this stage to establish “discriminatory motives” in the death of the young man. In a press conference on Friday, the young man’s family also called for “remain cautious” in the face of claims of an anti-Semitic motive.
