Death of Yvan Colonna: new clashes in Bastia, one seriously injured

Clashes took place on Wednesday evening in Bastia (Haute-Corse). About fifty hooded rioters threw molotov cocktails at the prefecture, the Banque de France and the police station. A French flag was burned.

Security forces responded with tear gas and disencirclement grenades. According to Haute-Corse firefighters, an 18-year-old protester was seriously injured in the calf. His vital prognosis is not engaged.

“We can imagine that this mechanism of violence will still feed itself,” explained Roger Antech, editor-in-chief of Corse Matin on CNEWS on Thursday.

Yvan Colonna’s fatal attack has sparked an explosion of anger for more than a month in Corsica. In total, around forty investigations have been opened by the prosecutor’s offices in Ajaccio and Bastia since the start of this violence.

Pending a return to calm, the government announced Monday the postponement of the first meeting scheduled for Friday as part of negotiations on the institutional future of the island.
