Philippines crash New Zealand World Cup party

New Zealand started their home tournament with a surprise win against Norway. But there is a damper against the Filipinos: the hosts concede the lead early on, run up in the second half – but cannot equalize. It is the first World Cup victory for the Philippines.

New Zealand’s soccer women suffered a first setback at the home World Cup. Five days after the surprising opening win against Norway, the co-hosts lost 0-1 (0-1) against the Philippines in Wellington. Sarina Bolden scored the first goal in the Philippines (24th) for the historic first victory of the World Cup debutant.

In the New Zealand capital, the new self-confidence of the “Football Ferns” after the coup against Norway was noticeable from the start, but in front of 32,357 spectators there were few convincing chances. If the ball did find its way in front of the Philippine goal, goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel was on the alert. Jacqui Hand also failed at the inside post (64th).

The supposed equalizer by hand in the 69th minute was denied after video evidence. Assist provider Hannah Wilkinson had previously started offside. Carleigh Frilles’ 2-0 lead (87′) was also withdrawn for offside.

New Zealand opened the World Cup with a historic 1-0 win over former world champions Norway. The Philippines lost 2-0 to Switzerland, coached by Inka Grings. In the group final, the New Zealanders meet Switzerland in Dunedin on Sunday, while the Philippines and Norway duel at the same time in Auckland (both 09:00 a.m. CEST).
