  • Simon Ehammer makes it to the long jump final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
  • The Appenzeller managed a jump of 8.13 m, which put him in the sixth best distance in the qualification.
  • The final will take place on Thursday evening (7:30 p.m., live on SRF).

The most promising Swiss medal candidate jumps for precious metal on Thursday. Simon Ehammer mastered the qualification in the long jump competition on Wednesday morning. The decathlete, who is only competing in the long jump at the World Championships this year, managed a jump of 8.13 m in the second of three attempts.

Although Ehammer missed the direct qualifying distance by two centimeters, for the entry into the final of the best 12 it was enough as 6th relatively easy. “I’m glad I got through it,” said the relieved Swiss afterwards. He was also satisfied with the width: “It would have been nice if I had still had these two centimeters. But I’d rather unpack one in the final.”

Pinnock catapulted himself into the favorite role

Meanwhile, Wayne Pinnock made a challenge to the competition in qualifying. The 22-year-old Jamaican jumped an impressive 8.54 m in his first attempt. Not only did he smash his own personal best (8.37 m), he also surpassed the previous year’s world best by Indian Jeswin Aldrin by 12 centimetres. Last year Pinnock jumped to 9th place at the World Championships in Eugene.

Meanwhile, Ehammer is already rid of a well-known competitor for the medals. Murali Sreeshankar, who was number 2 in the annual world best list before qualifying, failed the competition completely. With a distance of 7.74 m he clearly missed the final.
