Delayed by Covid-19, Final Fantasy 16 will appear in spring 2022

Salutations to all,

The last time we chatted, I promised you that I would have more information about Final Fantasy XVI sometime in the year 2021. However, I regret to inform you that I will not be able to keep this promise because complications from the COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game’s development by nearly six months.

The latest addition to the Final Fantasy series developed for the PlayStation 5, Final Fantasy XVI has assembled a large team of talented creators from around the world. However, in order to offset the effects of COVID-19, we had to decentralize this work force by allowing staff to tackle their missions from their homes. This unfortunately hampered communication with the Tokyo office, resulting in delays – and in extreme cases even cancellations – in resource deliveries from our external partners.

That said, we have spent a large part of 2021 fixing this problem, and we hope that its impact will be minimized by the new year, which will allow us to better focus on the tasks at hand: improve the quality of graphics resources, refine combat mechanics, flesh out individual battles, put the finishing touches on cutscenes, and perform overall graphics optimization. Our main goal now is to have as much hands on the game as possible to keep it running smoothly.

So the question is, when can we expect to receive the next round of information? Well, I’m happy to announce that the current plan is to make our next big reveal in the spring of 2022, in order to generate excitement until the game’s eventual release.

I sincerely apologize to everyone who has been looking forward to hearing more about Final Fantasy XVI, and thank you for your patience as we focus our efforts on development.
