And with regard to the parliamentary elections in the fall, that should also be a campaign issue for the FDP. From a Liberal point of view, that makes perfect sense. Because when it comes to economic policy or social security reform, the ranks of FDP supporters are very closed.
Delimitation to the left – cooperation with civil society
That was completely different four years ago, when the FDP focused heavily on environmental policy and climate protection. Ecological issues do not play a major role in the liberal campaign planning this year. The FDP President demarcates himself sharply to the left. In Burkart’s speech there is also criticism of the SVP and its policy on foreigners – but overall this criticism is much less severe than that of the left.
In fact, for Thierry Burkart it is important that the civil forces work together: “Of course there are different topics. For example economic policy, but also other areas where we can work together, where we want to work together and where we should work together. Because if we don’t do it, only the left in this country will benefit.”
In the election year, the FDP is positioning itself clearly to the right of center and hopes to address as many voters as possible with clear and sometimes polarizing statements. There will be a first test run in three weeks. Then there will be cantonal elections in Zurich and Basel-Landschaft.
