In an interview with TechCrunch, Michel Protti, head of privacy at Meta, confirmed that Threads is working on the possibility of preserving its Instagram account when deleting its account. For the moment, the two social networks are linked, and it is impossible to separate from one without eliminating the other. However, you will have to wait a little longer to benefit from it.
When it launched, Threads won everything in its path, surpassing 100 million users in just a few days. However, a few days later, the social network had already lost half of its daily users. For what ? There are several possible reasons for this phenomenon, but it is clear that the lack of functionality has not helped the platform maintain the interest of Internet users.
Indeed, if the Twitter clone does perfectly what we expect, we had to wait a long time before having a feed dedicated to its subscriptions, while the promised desktop version is not yet available. But what has surely cooled many Internet users is undoubtedly the very tenuous link between his Threads account and his Instagram account.
Threads will allow you to delete your account without touching Instagram
A link that users least interested in the platform would do well without, since it prevents you from deleting your Thread account without deleting your Instagram account at the same time. Very quickly, the teams in charge of the project assured that it would soon be possible to remove one without eliminating the other. Michel Protti, head of privacy protection at Meta, took advantage of an interview with TechCrunch to reiterate the promise.
On the same subject — Threads will not be available in France for several months, according to the boss of Instagram
“Technically, it was extremely difficult to allow a separate Threads account to be deleted without also deleting your overall Instagram account from the start,” explains the latter. “We have therefore ensured that the user can always exercise their deletion rights, by deactivating the account to hide all content, putting it in private mode or deleting individual threads.”
Michel Protti even ventured to give a deadline: according to him, the functionality should arrive by December. A relatively wide firing window which will not reassure users, who will undoubtedly have to wait a certain time before seeing the option arrive. Finally, for us, the application should still be available by then.
