Demanding missions – When every second counts on the Autobahn

Several injured, broken vehicles, a demolished tanker: Fire brigades practiced for accident response on the motorway under extremely realistic conditions.

Hardly a day goes by without a serious accident on the domestic motorways and expressways. These rescue operations, which often last for hours, pose a huge challenge both to the first responders and to the equipment. It is therefore all the more important to internalize the optimal process without it actually being a matter of life and death. Several fire brigades from the Tulln district have learned from this Grund practiced an accident on the Stockerauer expressway at Rübenplatz in Königsbrunn am Wagram. The assumption was a traffic accident involving several vehicles, which led to the S 5 being closed. A truck was involved in an accident and a following car crashed into the semi-trailer. A flatbed truck with a liquid tank skidded during an evasive maneuver and crashed into another car. Several people were trapped. Rescue lane, vehicle noise The exercise was carried out extremely realistically. Private cars simulated a rescue lane, and the sound of passing vehicles was simulated via a music system in order to make communication between the comrades more difficult, as in a real operation. The “injured” were played by members of the Absdorf fire brigade youth. 57 members were on duty who, among other things, freed “trapped” people, set up fire protection and took care of the leaking tank. Section fire brigade commander Ernst Mantler was also satisfied with the process: “The cooperation and professionalism of the friendly fire brigades was really excellent.”
