Over a year ago, director Dennis Gansel’s wife suffered a stillbirth. After the terrible stroke of fate, the couple now has reason to be happy: the two have become parents of a daughter.

While Dennis Gansel, 49, was able to celebrate great success as an actor and director in Germany and internationally, he and his wife Ann-Kristin had to cope with a heavy blow of fate in their private life. In June 2021, their daughter Ida died just six weeks before she was born. A painful loss that accompanies the couple to this day, Gansel now reveals to “Bild”.

16 months after the tragedy, Dennis and Ann-Kristin, who already have son Michel, 5, are now parents again. Daughter Emma lets her wallow in baby happiness. In an emotional interview, the film star reveals details about the birth and explains the fears associated with the pregnancy.

Dennis Gansel: “Emma brings so much light and love into our lives”

Dennis and Ann-Kristin experienced many ups and downs during their pregnancy. “We were always afraid that something would happen again, precisely because Ida’s cause of death could not be clarified,” says the “Jim Button and Luke the Locomotive Driver” director to “Bild”. Eventually, little Emma was born by caesarean section, but the birth didn’t go smoothly. “Complications arose during the caesarean section, so Anna had to be put under general anesthesia. But I was allowed to stay in the operating room and receive Emma right away.”

In the meantime, mother and child seem to have recovered. The happy parents enjoy family life with their newborn, who bears the same name as Lukas’ locomotive, and son Michel. Daughter Ida carries the couple in her heart, she will always remain an integral part of their lives. “We will never forget her and we always go to her grave once a week,” emphasizes Gansel, revealing that she was recently at the cemetery with Emma and her brother. “It was a comforting moment, but also a very sad one.” , says the filmmaker, adding: “Emma brings so much light and love into our lives that it feels like a dark curtain has opened a little.”
