What is a Depressed Vagina?

A depressed vagina (“vaginal atrophy”) can develop when a woman has not had sex for a long time. Due to the lack of stimulation, the vagina is poorly supplied with blood. There is a lack of oxygen, as a result of which the collagen fibers in the vaginal wall recede. This in turn reduces the elasticity of the connective tissue.

What are the symptoms of a depressed vagina?

Symptoms of a depressed vagina include:

  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Decreased desire for sex
  • Decreased humidity

Many people with these symptoms initially think of a fungal infection, which causes almost the same complaints. In order to be able to distinguish the infection from the vaginal atrophy, the gynecologist should be consulted.

Why is my vagina getting depressed in the first place?

Even if it sounds strange at first, a depressed vagina is actually a protective function of the body. If there is no sex partner and the woman does not satisfy herself either, the desire generally decreases, as I said. What is negative for the vagina is good for the rest of the body – because this saves energy.

Who is affected?

Downside depression can affect women of any age, but it is most common during menopause. The reason: In this phase of life, the estrogen level decreases. The hormone fulfills various functions in the body, Among other things, estrogen also ensures that the vaginal flora remains healthy. A lack of estrogen therefore also increases the risk of atrophy.

And what can I do about a depressed vagina?

Actually, the simplest treatment option for depressed vagina is sex. It is not even important whether the lovemaking is carried out with a partner or alone – the main thing is that the vagina is stimulated. Since atrophy can lead to pain during sex (for example with vaginismus), one should take a lot of time and start slowly. Lubricant can help against dryness. By the way, the treatment is also the best prevention – Regularly having sex or self-gratification lowers the risk of a depressed vagina.
