The Ukrainian National Guard actually has tasks such as border security and internal security. Since the beginning of the Russian attack, their units have also been fighting on the front. Now President Zelensky is replacing several generals.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a decree dismissing several high-ranking generals in the National Guard. The highest-ranking officer to go was the 1st Deputy Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Volodymyr Kondratyuk. In addition, three other deputies were hit, Lieutenant General Olexandr Nabok, and the two major generals Oleh Sachon and Mykola Mykolenka.

With the exception of Sachon, all of the generals were in office before the war. The background to the reshuffles in the leadership of the National Guard is not yet known. Just a few months ago, Zelenskyj replaced the head of the authority and put a battle-experienced officer in Olexandr Pivnenko at the helm.

The National Guard is a paramilitary unit that reports to the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior and is actually responsible for border security and protecting internal security. It was launched in 2014 after the Russian annexation of Crimea and was particularly involved in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the National Guard has been fighting on the front together with the Ukrainian army.
