Despite lockdown – around 60 percent in Upper Austria in school

Between 60 and 70 percent of the students in Upper Austria showed up at school on the first day of the lockdown. Nationwide it is 70 percent, in Salzburg only 50 percent. There was a tendency for fewer children to attend primary schools in some federal states, and an above-average number of children at secondary schools.

“In Salzburg and Upper Austria, the countries that are badly affected, there are significantly fewer students than in the other federal states. Overall, the parents have confidence in our system and are happy that the children are being tested, ”says Education Minister Heinz Fassmann. In the previous lockdowns it was different for the school types. At that time, there were significantly more classes in elementary schools than in lower and upper grades. The fact that it is the other way around this time is likely to be due to the vaccination that is already available for older students. From today, a mask is compulsory in schools – at elementary schools, secondary schools, lower secondary schools and special schools, pupils must wear at least mouth and nose protection, all other pupils and all teachers need an FFP2 mask. The respective mask may only be removed during mask breaks when airing. In addition, tests are carried out three times a week – at least once using a PCR test.
