Destiny 2: a major change at the helm of the game, should players fear the worst?

While Destiny 2 entered a long waiting phase for many players following the postponement of the expansion The Final Formdespite the activities designed to keep the community minimally occupied over the coming months, starting with Riven’s Wishes And Moments of Triumph 2023, This is very surprising news that came out last night and is not necessarily reassuring at first glance.. Indeed, current game director Joe Blackburn has announced that he will be leaving the studio. He had joined Bungie in 2015 and was then part of the team dedicated to Raids (of which Last Wish), before being the creative lead on the acclaimed Season of Opulence. In 2019, however, he had already looked elsewhere, at Riot Gamesbefore returning in 2020 as director of Destiny 2a position he has held since Beyond the Light.

It is through a long series of tweets that he therefore announced and explained his departure, while revealing the identity of his replacement, well known to long-time fans of the studio. With the end of the Saga of Light and Darkness and the layoffs at the end of last year, it was at a pivotal moment in the history of the game and the studio that he chose to distance himself, but you shouldn’t necessarily see it as a bad omen though..

Next month, The Final Form will pass one of its most critical internal milestones: a ritual we call end-to-end playtesting.

This ritual has been a key part of development since Forsaken.

It’s several consecutive days of internal playtesting that not only generates incredibly valuable final feedback on everything coming this summer, but also spiritually kicks off a transition into bug fixing and polish work.

As we approach this important milestone, I was able to play hundreds of hours of Final Formand what Bungie’s world-class talents created quickly became one of the things I’m most proud to have worked on throughout my career.

This ritual will be particularly meaningful to me personally, as it will also serve as a time to passing the torch of Destiny 2 Game Director to the next era of leadership as I head towards a new adventure beyond the walls of Bungie.

As we reach end-to-end playtesting next month, Tyson Green will take the reins as D2 game director. If you’ve been following Bungie for a while, you’ve heard the name. From Halo’s PvP to crafting exotic weapons in D1, Tyson plays a vital role in Bungie’s legacy since Myth II.

As a deeply invested Guardian before starting here at Bungie, being part of the Destiny 2 team has been the privilege of a lifetime.

I am and will forever remain a long-time Bungie fan and believe in what the teams within its walls are capable of.

I still have some time before passing the torch, but as I look forward to taking a big break from social media, I know I’ll see you all around the Tower again. It’s going to be awesome playing Destiny with you all.

He is therefore a veteran of Bungie who will take over in the coming months, Tyson Greenthat the players of Halo of the time therefore know well, especially fans of PvP. Is this good news forTest, which is a thorny subject among the community? Only time will tell.

And something rare enough for us to talk about it too, Luke Smith also spoke on Twitter / X to comment on the announcement, even though he had deleted all these past discussions from the platform. As a reminder and according to the latest news, he is the executive creative director of the universe destiny as a whole alongside Vice President of Licensing Mark Noseworthy (if nothing has changed), Dan McAuliffe being general manager of Destiny 2.

Two things, but in two posts.
1) Joe
2) Tyson

First of all, I remember interviewing Joe to join the Raid team after Destiny 2014 and just hoping after our conversation that other interviewers would love what he could bring to Bungie as much as I did.

They did it.

Then, when Joe joined Bungie while we were working on Beyond Light, eventually taking over as director of Destiny 2, he and the team truly delivered on the promise of an expansion with The Witch Queen. Aside from himself and his family – and his very lucky future colleagues – no one is as excited as I am about the next step in his career. He will definitely be missed here.

Second, Tyson (bless him and his lack of social media) Green is one of the most experienced developers and one of the best not only on Destiny 2, but also at Bungie.

I remember late nights playing Destiny 2014, testing the game with Jason, ME (presumably ME Chung, Editor’s note), and Tyson as we all tried to translate the best feelings from WoW, MMOs, and games that we loved in a first person shooter.

I remember Tyson and I working closely together during The Taken Kinghe and his teams worked to organize the game into a series of giant quests, and our repeated attempts to detail the end of the game and find a home for Conspiracy Theory-D (a shotgun, Editor’s note).

Tyson is a humble and thoughtful developer, and one of the best game designers I’ve ever worked with. Your Guardians remain – via Tyson and the D2 team – in incredible hands.

Back to where I was.
See you soon.

A page will therefore turn for Destiny 2 in the coming months, but the game appears to be in good hands.

Its different extensions can be purchased at the house of Gamesplanet if you play on PC.
