Spider-Man Blames Himself For Knull’s Invasion

Spider-Man is blaming himself for the death and destruction caused by the King in Black – even if he’s not really responsible for it.

Warning! Spoilers for King in Black: The Amazing Spider-Man #1 below.

Spider-Man has never been one to go easy on himself and with King in Black’s invasion of the Marvel Universe, the webslinger has placed the blame for the death and destruction solely on his own shoulders. Peter Parker thinks that since he brought the Venom symbiote to Earth many years ago, that he’s responsible not only for the symbiote villains but for Knull’s arrival.

Peter has always felt a great responsibility as a hero protecting the Earth. Seeing everything shrouded in darkness by the King in Black, he can’t help but feel that he is to blame. In his words, Spider-Man originally brought the first symbiote to Earth and therefore started the domino effect that would lead to Knull’s invasion. In previews for Spider-Man’s upcoming King in Black adventure, Peter sees himself as the reason everything has been turned into darkness in the Marvel Universe.

In an exclusive preview to CBR.com of King in Black: The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Jed MacKay, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico and Erick Arciniega, Peter struggles with feelings of guilt over the King in Black’s symbiote army enveloping the Earth in darkness. He says since he brought the symbiote back to his home planet, everything that went strong “has been on me.” As he tells himself to breathe, Peter can’t help feel like he was patient zero when it came to Knull’s forces.

Spider-Man’s pity party is interrupted by his Spider-Senses go off and he sees what appears to be a symbiote dragon grabbing an old lady and taking her away. After catching up with it and punching the winged-creature, Peter realizes that it’s the fellow hero Reptil, who’s taken the form of a pterodactyl in order to get someone to safety.

While it’s true that Peter brought the symbiote threat to the Earth a long time ago, he isn’t responsible for Knull’s forces or the ensuing chaos that came with it. After all, the King in Black is an ancient being who’s been plotting his attack for a long time. While the symbiote Spider-Man brought to the planet would eventually bond with Eddie and later Dylan Brock, it’s unclear whether the Avengers could even fight back against Knull without Dylan’s help. It goes both ways. Still, Spider-Man feels responsible for everything, and much like his fellow Avenger, Iron Man, he’s finding reasons to blame himself for the uncontrollable God of Symbiote’s destruction. The King in Black’s invasion and subsequent takeover could never have been predicted even if Peter thinks he could have done something to prevent it. King in Black: The Amazing Spider-Man is in comic stores on March 17.
