  • A good two weeks after the devastating fires broke out in the US state of Hawaii with at least 115 deaths, hundreds of people are still missing.
  • The FBI and the County of Maui on Friday released a list of 388 people whose whereabouts are unknown after the fires in the coastal city of Lahaina.
  • As a result, those named or relatives on the list got in touch, so that around a hundred people could be removed from the list.

The number of victims is expected to increase, said Maui Police Chief John Pelletier at a press conference. Divers would also search the coastal waters. Because of the intensity of the fire, identifying the remains is sometimes very difficult.

The authorities are still hoping for information from the public in their investigations. At times, 1732 people were reported missing, who were later found safely.

Meanwhile, helpers continued to search the burned-out buildings with corpse-sniffing dogs. The authorities called on the relatives of missing persons to submit DNA samples in order to be able to compare them with bodies found if necessary.

Worst fires in the US in more than 100 years

The forest and bush fires broke out in several places on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii on August 8th. More than 2,200 buildings were destroyed on Maui, and property damage is estimated at more than $5.5 billion. Measured by the number of victims, these were the most serious fires in the USA for more than 100 years.
