  • The Dexter New Blood season finale brought the reboot’s storyline to a rounded, if slightly hasty, conclusion.
  • At the end, fans were in for a big surprise.
  • The finale seems pretty definitive, but could the story still go on?

In the spectacular series finale of Dexter: New Blood, Angela is closer than anyone has ever been to the truth about Dexter. The murder of Matt Caldwell set in motion a series of events that would ultimately bring Dexter down.

The ultimate proof

Angela finds Matt Caldwell’s titanium screw in the burned remains of Dexter’s house. So he’s officially arrested for Matt’s murder, but not Kurt’s. Angela begins interrogating the ex-serial killer. She confronts Dexter about the titanium screw needed to fix a fracture Matt sustained in a boating accident. She also shows him the note she received that points to Dexter as the killer.

Angela doesn’t know if Dexter acted in self-defense or not, but she is sure that Dexter burned the body. Dexter tells her that Kurt lied when he said Matt was in New York. He cleared out the secret room under his cabin in the woods the day after Dexter and Molly arrived. So maybe I have Kurt murders Matt and plans to frame Dexter for the murderto get revenge for Kurt being arrested.

Logan finds the story plausible and he warns Angela that a jury might agree. But Angela and Logan sense that something is amiss. When Harrison sees Dexter again, the father insists that his arrest had nothing to do with Kurt’s murder. In a few days he would be released from prison and assured: “We will get through it”.

The connections to previous murders

Angela calls Angel Batista and tells him that there have been a few deaths in Iron Lake that are similar to what happened to the Bay Harbor Butcher. She asks about Sergeant Doakes and Batista tells her that his late wife Maria had the theory that the killer was Dexter Morgan. But he thinks Dexter is long dead. Angela sends him a photo of herself with Dexter in happier times. Angela asks if Batista ever caught Maria’s killerwhereupon Batista makes his way directly to her.

Angela questions Dexter again. She admits that he might get away with killing Matt, but she’d bet her career and family that he’s a killer. With the word “ketamine” added, she shows him a photo of Jasper and says he had the drug in his system. She then shows him photos of the Bay Harbor Butcher’s victims who had the same needle punctures and ketamine residue on their bodies.

Dexter then asks Angela to turn off the camera. “You were right about Kurt Caldwell,” he says. “I can proof it.” He reveals that Kurt had been a serial killer for 25 years and gives her the exact location of Kurt’s hideout. It’s the proof she’s always been looking for. In his prison cell, Debra haunts Dexter. Deb says this story will never let go of Angela.

Dexter’s escape

Dexter asks Logan for some water. When he brings him the refreshment, Dexter grabs him and bangs his head against the cell bars. He demands the cell keys, but when Logan tries to draw his gun, Dexter breaks his neck. He calls Harrison and asks his son to meet him where they found the white deer.

Angela goes through Kurt’s hideout and finds everything she’s been looking for her entire career. She wants to radio Logan, but there is silence. Meanwhile, Dexter meets Harrison in the woods and the boy wants to know whose blood is on him. Harrison remembers Dexter calling from Logan’s phone and puts two and two together.

father and son

“There was no other way,” Dexter assures. But Harrison is angry with his father and has to go to his Think years of loneliness. Harrison demands that his father turn himself in, but Dexter tells him that he would face the death penalty. “Perhaps you deserve it,” replies his son.

Dexter tells Harrison that he doesn’t have to come with him, but he has to go now. As Dexter walks away Harrison draws his rifle and points it at his father. He blames Dexter for what happened to his mother and aunt Deb. “You’re right,” the serial killer replies to the teenager. “You deserve better. A better life. A better father.”

Dexter reminds his son to cock the gun. With tears in his eyes, Dexter knows this is the only way out. and after a loud bang, Dexter collapses and lies dead in the snow. “You did well,” he murmurs to the boy as Deb touches his hand.

Angela appears and yells for Harrison to drop the gun. In the assumption of being arrested, the boy stretches out his hands. After a hug, Angela types him in instead Bundle up cash and tells him to take the truck, drive to the highway and never come back.

In the truck, Harrison re-reads the letter Dexter wrote to Hannah. It says he’s still alive and would give anything to see her again. He wanted his child to live a life without fear. But he also knew that in his present a normal life for Harrison would not have been possible would. “Unless Harrison shows dark tendencies, I beg you to let me die so my son can live.” As the police cars speed toward Iron Lake, Harrison drives away.

end or continuation?

“Dexter: New Blood” is the official ending for Dexter. This is also assured by series creator Clyde Phillips. “I have three words for you: Dexter is dead,” he said in an interview with the online magazine Deadline. The main question that fans are naturally concerned with now is: What will become of Dexter’s son Harrison? Of course, his story is now completely open after the end of “Dexter: New Blood”. There is certainly potential for one here Season 2 or a spin-off series.

After the finale, fans will have to decide for themselves whether they like the new ending better than the rather unpopular conclusion to Dexter season 8. In any case, the producers can no longer make another course correction unless they want to bring Dexter back as a ghost.
