DHB team before the handball European Championship semi-finals: What is enough to advance against Croatia?

DHB team after an important victory
Even a defeat could lead to the semi-finals

With their victory over Hungary, the German national handball team has once again taken its sporting fate into its own hands at the home European Championships. The door to the semi-finals is wide open. The DHB team could even be pushed through by the competition without any action of their own.

After the largely inspiring 35:28 win against Hungary, the German handball players are close to reaching the European Championship semi-finals. The team of national coach Alfred Gíslason is in second place in Group I with 5:3 points behind France (8:0) and therefore has all the trump cards against its competitors Hungary and Austria (both 4:4).

There are several scenarios to achieve the goal. Even a defeat in the last main round game against Croatia on Wednesday (8.30 p.m./ARD and in the live ticker on ntv.de) could be allowed if the competition doesn’t win.

The German team will reach the semi-finals if they:

– loses against Croatia and Hungary also loses against France and Austria against Iceland

– does not lose by more than nine goals against Croatia, Hungary loses against France and Austria draws against Iceland. If there is a tie on points with Austria and no winner in the direct duel, the better goal difference would speak for the DHB selection
