Shogun Season 2: Are there 5 more seasons coming? This is how the mini-series can be extended on Disney+

“Shogun” on Disney+ is receiving high praise from all sides. The historical epic is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell and was filmed as a five-part television series in 1980.

The new adaptation even includes 10 episodes and tells the complete story of the novel in one season. All episodes have now been released and a sequel seems unlikely at first glance, after all, “Shogun” is considered a miniseries. But couldn’t the plot continue?

Too successful for one season

“Shogun” has been compared to “Game of Thrones” in numerous reviews. Even if there is no hype on the GoT scale, US broadcaster FX, which produced “Shogun”, would certainly be very interested in continuing the series.

The show’s producers have already been approached by The Direct about a possible second season. Although they emphasize that “Shogun” as a miniseries already offers a well-rounded ending, a clear no is never given.

I think we’re telling the complete story of the book. And we come to the end. I hope that those who have read the book will see that it ends exactly how the book ends. And we’re really looking forward to that because it’s a very surprising ending, that [James] Clavell created for the book. And it’s beautifully ambiguous in some ways.

Marks also hopes that “Shogun” will spark audience interest in other, similar stories from or about Japan. Michaela Clavell, the daughter of novelist James Clavell, who was also an executive producer on “Shogun,” sounds a bit more positive when it comes to a possible second season.

The audience will let us know if they have an appetite [auf eine zweite Staffel] has. We will see. That’s a good question. I wish I knew the full answer, but I don’t.

Even if “Shogun” doesn’t really lend itself to a second season, a continuation in the form of an anthology series would be possible. You wouldn’t have to look long for templates, because the Asian saga by “Shogun” author James Clavell consists of a total of 6 books.

The miniseries doesn’t have to stay mini

“Shogun” was Clavell’s third Asian novel, but takes place before all of his other works. Moving forward in time, Tai-Pan is next. The story takes place in Hong Kong in 1841 and was made into a film in 1986. Together with “Gai-Jin”, “Noble House Hongkong” and “Whirlstorm”, a connected story that spans generations is told here.

“Gai-Jin” also features the descendants of some characters from “Shogun” and thus connects the two storylines. Even if the big jump in time of over 200 years would turn “Shogun” into a completely different series, fans could also be interested in further Clavell adaptations if they are told as captivatingly as Season 1 of “Shogun”.

Clavell’s first novel, “Rat King,” describes his time in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. This makes the story a little out of line, but two characters from “Rat King” also appear later in “Noble House Hong Kong”. A cross-season story could easily be formed from Clavell’s remaining five Asia books.
